Plate Picks from Mini Jube

Doesn't she look like she knows what she's talking about?

Two years ago, the two foals I had did a great job of calling the Plate. Chestnut filly Gracie picked chestnut filly Ginger Brew, of course, because, well, chestnut fillies rule, don't you know? Billy went with the Ontario-sired angle, and Not Bourbon. Not Bourbon and Ginger Brew ran one-two. Not bad, kids! Following Gracie's example, Jubie's little girl has to go with Roan Inish (because, of course, *bay* fillies rule). For the Ontario-sired angle I kind of like Mobthewarrior (from the first crop of Billy's dad, Mobil), but I think I'm with the baby; I'll be cheering for Roan Inish, because I just like the story!

Mobilizer

I hear Sam-Son has got a big bash planned - hey, they only have three starters in the big race, one of which is the favoured full brother to last year's winner. At the other end of the backstretch is Roger Attfield's Mobilizer. It wouldn't be a surprise if either of those barns won.

For the first time in a long time, I'm planning to stay home on Plate Day. The reason many people will be visiting Woodbine tomorrow - some of them for the first time - is what influenced my decision to stay away. I would love to be there, the Queen herself being in attendance this time around, but it will be a zoo, which will give me little opportunity to get decent photos. For some reason Woodbine likes to give me a hard time about granting media credentials, and I figured this year would be even tougher. Very sad! Maybe next year, we'll have a horse running in the Plate again. Billy's looking pretty good as a two-year old - it could happen! Like I've said before, it's all about the dream.

"But...What About Me?"

Poor Billy. Gracie always gets all the attention. It's tough being a colt! As colts go, Billy is very good - now. I've been very careful to keep things straightforward with him. He had his moments when he was younger, but he's really come around to be quite a gentleman. Our work is not done yet, of course, so Billy doesn't get any of the leeway Miss Grace does! Poor Billy!

Just to keep our family connections straight, Billy is Clever's son, and a half-brother to Peaker. His dad is Mobil, an up-and-coming young sire in Ontario. Next year Mobil's first foals will start running.

This painting is 8 x 10 oil on canvas, with the same limited palette I've been using. And as Billy is the youngest on the farm, I've done my planned paintings of "the family." There are more, but these first eleven paintings have featured most of the regulars. We'll see where things go from here! Stay tuned!

The Morning Line

Plate morning! There’s always a special feel around the backstretch, whether you’re running in the big race or not. I remember we always made sure the shed was leveled and raked even more carefully than on normal days, and the apron and lawn outside was particularly clean. We even polished the brass on the halters. Being stabled close to the receiving barn, we witnessed the arrival of the horse guards first-hand, something that was sure to set my dear girl Petunia over the edge! Not her favourite morning, that’s for sure.


When I turned the foals out this morning, they spent the first five minutes running and playing. It was probably inspired by the cool, damp air, but I entertained that they just know it’s Plate Day! Gracie is backing Ginger Brew, because, of course, chestnut fillies rule. Billy’s dad Mobil ran second in the Plate, and Gracie pointed out that it was a chestnut that beat him (stablemate Wando, 2003). Billy kind of likes Not Bourbon today, being Ontario-sired and all, but he let on that he’ll be rooting for Uncle Jerry and Deputiformer. Nothing wrong with picking a longshot! Just ask Monster…her dad Tejabo sired a whopper in TJ’s Lucky Moon back in 2002.


Woodbine Entertainment and LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement are having a neat fundraiser after this year’s Plate. The saddle cloths of all the starters will be auctioned on eBay this week to raise money for LongRun. I’ll post a link to the auctions as soon as I have it so you can check it out.


Okay, so I’m hoping I’ve distracted you from asking about the Mike Fox painting. All right, I admit it, it’s not done. So I came up short. It’s getting very close though. At this stage I’m working on a lot of nit-picky stuff, so progress is a lot slower. Won’t be long now! And maybe I’ll start on this year’s winner a little earlier! Hope that grey sky brightens a little by post time!
