And so it goes...

Sometimes, with animals it seems, there are things we have to accept we'll never know or understand. I lost my Brittany Spaniel, Zen, to a mysterious bacterial infection at ten years of age that neither he nor the heavy-duty broad spectrum antibiotics could beat. He had never been sick a day in his life, then one day, he clearly wasn't well, wouldn't eat, spiked a fever. Two weeks later, he was gone. All the PM told us was what killed him...it couldn't tell us where it came from, or why...

Yesterday, we lost a horse here on the farm. Not an older horse, but a yearling. Luna was a sweet thing, with a hint of a bad girl image that reared its head once or twice. She made friends with my old mare and the mini, Jesse, so they were her turnout buddies. Yesterday, at the noon hay feeding, we found her. There are no clear signs as to what happened. There will be no PM, CSI is not going to show up and investigate. It goes under the heading of "these things happen with horses." And they do. And we have to accept it...but it's never easy.

So rest in peace, Lovely Luna...we only knew you a short while, but we'll miss you still.

I never did cry about Luna's untimely death until just now reading your blog with such a sweet picture of her there.
Was it karma to have given her such a poignant name?

Still can make me cry reading it, and still mystifies me thinking about it. At least I could write about Luna...thinking about Maggie just paralyzes me...though her loss was inevitable. Isn't there a song by Counting Crows called "Long December"? :-(
